Resistant and Nonresistatn Statistics

Example

We will use our Zillow data from before

38 60 60 70 90 101 250

Recall that we had:

Median=70

IQR=41

and we calculuate the mean

Mean=\(\overline{x}=\frac{\sum x}{7}=95.6\)

In the previous example we did see that we had an outlier of 250, so let's look at what happens when we ignore that data value

38 60 60 70 90 101

Median=65

IQR=30

Mean=\(\overline{x}=\frac{\sum x}{6}=59.85\)

So we see that our mean is the most effected by ignoring the outlier!
